What's involved in the Plemmons program?

Expectations of Plemmons:

The W.H. Plemmons Program has a proud tradition of success and accomplishment among its participants. As a foundation for that success, all Fellows are expected to meet the following minimum requirements to maintain your scholarship and continue in the program.

  • Fellows must maintain a 3.0 cumulative G.P.A. at Appalachian
  • Fellows must actively participate in at least one co-curricular campus student community organization during their freshmen year
  • Fellows must participate in leadership development opportunities
  • Fellows must complete Principles of Leadership (HPC 2700)
  • Fellows must actively seek leadership roles with student or community organizations during all four years in the program
  • Fellows must serve as mentors in the program
  • Fellows are required to develop a four-year Individual Leadership Plan
  • Fellows are expected to strive to meet their full potential and seek ever-increasing leadership opportunities to serve others
  • Achieve at least 100 points per year using the prescribed point system that awards points for participation and involvement

Outdoor Experience

Plemmons have the opportunity to participate in an Outdoor Experience every year. These outdoor experiences are used to test the Fellows leadership skills and their ability to work as a team. Appalachian recognizes the importance of an outdoor learning environment and provides the proper facilities for Plemmons Fellows to expand their horizons.

Hold On!

Leadership Retreat

As a part of the Freshman Experience at Appalachian and with the W. H. Plemmons Leader Fellows program, our Freshman Plemmons will participate in a weekend retreat at the Blowing Rock Assembly grounds, off campus, as classes are beginning. During this weekend, they will participate in a variety of leadership activities, learn the value of group-think and working as teams. This is a valuable time for our freshmen Plemmons to get to know the people that they will be working along side of on Appalachian's campus.

Freshman Leadership Retreat

Middle School Workshop

The Middle School workshop remains to be one of the larger service projects that our Plemmons fellows participate in. This year, Plemmons will host over 40 students from grades 6-8 on Appalachian’s campus.  We will be hosting two of these this year.  One will be with Gamewell Middle School, and the other will be with William Lenoir Middle School.  They will be participating in activities that will help build their teamwork and communication skills, and also make them aware of the diversity that surrounds them.

The students will also eat lunch with all of our Plemmons fellows, take a tour of Appalachian’s campus and have the opportunity to ask questions about college life in our student panel.

HPC 2700 - Introduction to Leadership Development

This course is designed to introduce students to models and theories of leadership and to create an understanding of and an appreciation for the
increasing complexity of leading diverse organizations. The course will provide students with opportunities for self-discovery, personal
growth and skill development through active learning and group discussions.

Each Plemmons Leader Fellow must enroll in this course their first semester.

Visitation Weekend

Seniors throughout Northwest North Carolina are invited to attend the Plemmons Leadership Retreat and Visitation Weekend. Each school in Catawba, Caldwell, Ashe, Watauga, Wilkes, Yadkin and Surry Counties of North Carolina were allowed to send two student representatives of their student body to participate in the leadership program. The students participate in leadership activities and presentations led by our Plemmons Fellows. Students also get the chance to visit the Fall Open House hosted by the Office of Admissions and attend an Appalachian football game while they're on campus. The visiting students also stay with students in their residence halls giving them a taste of student life in college. The Plemmons program is working to expand the program to additional high school involvement in the future.

This year 40 students from more than 20 high schools will participate in this leadership program.
